The obverse side of the coin features a portrait of President John F. Kennedy 35th president of the United States. Within hours of Kennedy’s assassination the director of the U.S. Mint began evaluating the possibility of featuring Kennedy on the silver dollar half dollar or quarter. The choice of coin was offered to Jackie she suggested the half dollar (which currently featured Benjamin Franklin) as she did not want to displace George Washington from the quarter. Congress passed legislation to feature Kennedy’s portrait on the half dollar one month later.
